I enjoyed the book immensely. Loved the photos! I recommend it be a part of every golfers library. The only thing I didn't care for was the \"Puck\" release. I'm all for mid-sole pitch shots, but I'm a lag-ster all the way. Trying to manage clubface with wrist break is not my thing and I believe it invites chaos.
Just a question here, but how can you love the book and totally disagree with the most important part of the swing, meaning what is going on in the impact zone Please understand, this is just a curious question.
Great question!I'm a pretty seasoned guy when it comes to this game and I have many friends on the various Tours and know a handful of wonderful instructors. In all my time, I've never heard the expression \"puck\" release until I read Nick's book. That's where he lost me. Also, I'm a Canuck and I grew up playing hockey (the \"puck\" game) and still play. Shooting a puck is all about the application of pressure, just like golf. There is no flip shooting a puck. I try and break my stick on the ice on every shot I take by applying forward lean, stressing the shaft and letting the stress move the puck. I'm glad the sticks can handle it!I can see that release with a 10-40 yard pitch I use a mid-sole pitch (my interpretation of his \"puck\" release) about half the time. To me it is a way of taking some of the \"heat\" off the ball. It reduces spin and gives me a little more predictable role out when the ball lands. That's about it... I certainly don't \"puck\" any full 5 iron shots:)That said, I love a bunch of the material in the book. There are some amazing images that insight powerful thoughts. Cheers,MC
I fooled around a little with the \"puck\" release yesterday. I did it the way it is illustrated in the book where it appears the left wrist breaks in what he refers to as what some would describe as a\"scooping\" motion. It's my opinion that actually calling it a \"puck\" release is very confusing as I don't really think it mimmicks a slapshot in hockey at all. Now I can understand using an actual slapshot type feeling incorporated in the golf swing. I think the point he is trying to make is just that the actual turning over over the hands happens well after impact. Just my two cents. While I find it confusing, he brings it all together when he talks about everything releasing together.
Why is turning both feet out bad advice
Well, Hogan clearly says in his book to square the back right foot. My experience is that this provides a more stable swing. That is me only. I am sure various people have success with different angles of the back foot. I just would not think that this is how a book should instruct people as the standard. Rather, I would think it is the exception.
But why Hogan in many video has right foot turned out more than prescribed in book. Understanding what impact the flare in the feet has on the rest of the body is the key. Square right foot equals most rotation and will limit hip slide. Good to prevent hooking, what Hogan fought, but for a slicer would cause spin out and bigger slices. For a push draw both feet should be flared somewhat.
Dan, I've always felt that foot flare is simply a governor on the pelvic rotation and that the amount of right foot flare affected the backswing more while the left foot flare affected the downswing more. This year, I started squaring the left foot more because I had it flared about 40 degrees in the past, which I thought was too much. Unfortunately, partly because of this, I've strained my left side sacro-illiac joint twice this year and have had to go back to flaring it more in order to relieve the pressure on this joint. Funny thing is, I'm flexible enough to square the right foot (even toed in slightly) and get a full turn in the backswing.
Eric Jones recommends the step drill in his book The Five Keys to Distance. I can do it OK, it's just about getting your weight over at the beginning of the downswing, the way a batter does in baseball, or a pitcher when he's throwing the ball. As for the snap release, if you agree with people like Jim McLean (and Ben Hogan), who think the golf swing is analogous to a throwing motion, it makes sense that it would end with a snap of the wrist. Try throwing a ball without releasing/snapping your wrist. Different strokes for different folks, but I don't see why trying something that doesn't work for you would set you back ten years. Just go back to what you were doing before or try something else. The Golfing Machine describes several alternative release methods and alternatives for other parts of the swing.
